Word-Formation: It had to use -kh to start the word (due to the harshness of the sound). The concept is darker in tone, so -u strengthened to -ô worked quite nicely. It needed a second consonant to sound good, so in comes -s, since it is harsher of tone then others like -l or -m. the final -o is to make it full-form, which is preferable with adjectives due to their inherently incomplete nature.
