Aorist

The “present past,” used in English when you are talking in the present tense about something in the past.  It is also the tense used when speaking in the present.

Biconsonantal verbs

Add an -a to the verb stem


*yad- “to go” → yada “goes”

Triconsonantal verbs

Syncope then add an -a to the verb stem


kalab- “to fall” → kalba “falls”

Derived verbs

Change the final vowel to a short ­-a

*azgarâ- “to wage war” → azgara “wages war”
